Tubeless Tyre Setup (Sealant & Installation)
Get your New Temple bike set up tubeless by the Temple Team.
Benefits:
- Small-mid size punctures self-heal almost instantly. The sealant we install into the tyre is able to permanently clog small holes (from thorns, glass or similar). A puncture can easily ruin your ride and/or make you late for your commitments, so this is a huge benefit.
- Ability to ride with lower pressures which provides more grip and smoother ride without risking innertube-pinch-flats. Highly recommended for gravel riding.
- Tubeless can be lighter (depending on how much sealant is used) and can provide lower rolling resistance.
Potential Downsides:
- Not fully puncture proof. Large cuts or sidewall gashes still require an emergency tube or a tubeless plug.
- The sealant would ideally be topped up from time to time (perhaps annually) or sooner if sealant has been lost through a puncture.
- Potential mess. Changing tyres or fixing a puncture that won’t seal can be messy compared to swapping a tube.
- More complicated setup. Seating the bead can require a compressor or booster pump and can be a little messy.
- Not available for all bikes. Requires tubeless ready rims, tyres, rim tape, sealant and valves. The Temple Adventure Disc 1, 2, 3 and Road 1 & 2 are all tubeless compatible but many of our other bikes are not.
Tubeless Tips:
- A tyre "booster" can make it easier to seat tubeless tyres at home, such as Schwalbe's tubeless booster.
- A tubeless repair kit, such as the WTB TCS tubeless repair kit, can help you to fix larger punctures by providing "plugs" to fill larger holes and provide something for the sealant to seal around.
Overall Temple recommends tubeless tyres to those looking for protection from punctures and the ability to run lower pressures for additional grip and ride-quality benefits. The downsides of tubeless tyres are easily overcome with investment into a tubeless booster, a tubeless repair kit and carrying a spare tube just-in-case.
